Accessibility statement
Byzantine Dots was made first and foremost for people who are blind or have low vision. Our aim is that everyone can use it, however they read.
Standard
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines WCAG 2.2, level AA (European standard EN 301 549), with text contrast at level AAA, taking into account Greek Law 4994/2022 (European Accessibility Act, Directive (EU) 2019/882).
What the service offers
- Full use with the keyboard only, with visible focus and a "Skip to content" link.
- Proper markup for screen readers (NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver, TalkBack): headings, labels on every field, error descriptions.
- Spoken progress during recognition and an announcement of the result; optional read-aloud with a voice installed on the device, for people who do not use a screen reader.
- Results suited to a Braille display (eBraille, Unicode Braille) and a Braille embosser (BRF), with a choice of cells per line.
- A check list describing each Braille segment, navigable with the arrow keys.
- A correction editor with choice lists and a field for the lyric syllables. It works fully with the keyboard and screen readers, in a dialog that keeps the focus and closes with Esc.
- An accessibility button (bottom right) with text size up to 200%, light, dark and high-contrast (black, white, yellow) appearance, and wider line and letter spacing. All colours are checked automatically for contrast.
- Adjustable Braille dot size. The page does not overflow sideways, even on a phone with 200% text.
- Low recognition confidence is shown by a dashed outline, not by colour alone.
- Respect for the "reduce motion" setting and for Windows high-contrast mode.
- Automatic retry with straightening and clean-up, and advice when a photo is blurred, dark or faint, so the user does not have to judge the photo by sight.
- All pages, Greek and English, were checked with axe-core (WCAG 2.0–2.2 A/AA): no violations (24 October 2026).
Known limitations
- The page image with boxes is a visual aid for sighted users; the same information is given as text in the check list.
- Reading the lyrics automatically from photos is experimental and often makes mistakes. The lyrics are checked or typed in the correction editor, and are then written correctly into the Braille. Neanes scores (.byzx) already contain the lyrics.
- There is not yet a camera guide with spoken directions for a blind user taking the photo; it is one of the next steps.
- Accessibility has been checked with automated tests and with the keyboard. There has not yet been a third-party audit or testing with blind users; this will happen in the pilot phase.
